The federal government announced this Tuesday (12) the creation of 100 new campuses of federal institutes (IFs) of education, science and technology. The Northeast is the region that will receive the largest number of new units, according to the Ministry of Education. See the numbers below: North: 12 campuses Northeast: 38 campuses Center-West: 10 campuses Southeast: 27 campuses South: 13 campuses The announcement took place at Palácio do Planalto, in a ceremony attended by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) . With the construction of new units, the number of federal institute campuses will reach 702 across the country. The Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, informed that the expansion of the units will create 140 thousand new places for students in the country, the majority in technical courses integrated into secondary education. Professional and technological education institutions (EPT) offer free professional, technical, undergraduate and postgraduate qualification courses. The increase in the number of campuses and enrollment in federal institutes has been defended by Lula since the beginning of his third term. The investment in new units is part of the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC). According to the Ministry of Education (MEC), R$3.9 billion will be invested in the coming years. The resources will also be used to improve other institutes. The institutes are part of the Federal Network of Professional and Technological Education, created in 2008. The institutions were created from former technical schools. The network is made up of 38 federal institutes, two federal technological education centers (Cefets), 22 technical schools linked to universities, Colégio Pedro II and the Federal Technological University of Paraná.
