Gonet defends action against Jefferson in the STF – 01/19/2024 – Power

The Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, defended that the action in which former deputy Roberto Jefferson is a defendant continues to be processed in the STF (Supreme Federal Court), as he sees a connection with the coup acts of January 8th.

According to Gonet, in demonstrations filed this Thursday (18), the accusations against Jefferson can be seen as a “relevant link” in the mechanism “that resulted in the violent acts of January 8”.

“This perspective is strengthened by the consideration that it is attributed to the defendant, in addition to having used part of the party structure financed by the treasury to weaken the institutions of the Republic, to have publicly formulated inane verbal attacks against central institutions of the democratic Republic”, said the PGR.

For him, there was “an effort on his part that the vision of this moment allows us to situate as a strategy aimed at promoting a movement of reprehensible disruption of the political order.”

The former deputy is accused of slander, incitement to commit damage to public property and homophobia. The action was filed due to a series of interviews in which Jefferson attacked the TSE (Superior Electoral Court), Covid’s CPI senators, the Supreme Court and LGBTQIA+ people.

The case against Jefferson would go to the Federal Court, but Minister Alexandre de Moraes decided to submit a question to the court’s plenary so that the case could continue in the Supreme Court.

Jefferson is currently admitted to a hospital in Rio de Janeiro. He was given preventive detention in 2022.

In October of that year, the former deputy fired rifle shots and threw two grenades at federal police officers who went to his address to comply with the STF’s arrest order.

Minister Alexandre de Moraes stated in his decision that Jefferson failed to comply with measures previously imposed by the court.

Jefferson’s lawyer, João Pedro Barreto, in response to Gonet’s statement, stated that “there is no probative link whatsoever” between the former deputy’s case and 8/1.

He also said that the Supreme Court has been setting precedents against the accumulation of cases by a single judge when analyzing the Operation Lava Jato processes, but that there is a “kind of super-competence on the part of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, who approaches, as was said, of an unconstitutional Court of Exception”.
