Gleisi sees PL as irresponsible with Bolsonaro supporters in charge of committees and minimizes losses – 03/07/2024 – Power

The national president of the PT, federal deputy Gleisi Hoffmann (PR), said this Thursday (7) that it was a great “irresponsibility” for the PL to nominate federal deputies Caroline de Toni (PL-SC) and Nikolas Ferreira (PL- MG) to command the Chamber’s Constitution and Justice and Education committees, respectively.

Gleisi also criticized the president of the House, deputy Arthur Lira (PP-AL) for not having sought mediation in the process. On the other hand, he stated that the government will not be harmed, arguing that the priority agendas are not being processed in the Chamber committees.

“I think it was irresponsible for the PL to nominate people of that level, as a rude person to preside over the Education Commission [Nikolas Ferreira]. This speaks against the Chamber, speaks against the PL, speaks against the institutions. I only have to regret, there is no way to intervene”, said the parliamentarian, upon arriving for the ceremony at Palácio do Planalto.

She also added that Nikolas does not have the capacity to prepare an agenda of projects for the commission.

“I think the President of the House should have tried to do this [intervir], but the Chamber will pay a price. It’s not us, no. It is the Chamber as an institution that will pay”, he added.

This Wednesday (6), Bolsonaro federal deputy Caroline de Toni was elected president of the CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission) of the Chamber of Deputies, in a setback for the Lula (PT) government. There were 49 votes in favor and 9 blank votes.

The CCJ is the main committee of the House, since all projects are processed there. In her second term, Caroline is from the more Bolsonaro wing of the PL and throughout 2023 she made several interventions against the PT government.

The PL, party of former president Jair Bolsonaro, also nominated federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) to head the Education Committee of the Chamber of Deputies. He was elected with 22 votes in favor and 15 blank — and under protests from left-wing parliamentarians.

Nikolas is one of the most active names in the opposition to the Lula government in Casa. He was the federal deputy with the most votes across the country in the 2022 elections, with 1.49 million votes.

Gleisi Hoffmann sought to minimize possible damage to President Lula’s government. He argued that the government’s priority proposals are being processed in the House on an urgent basis, which means that they are not being processed by thematic committees and are being voted directly in plenary.

“The government’s main projects have not been processed by the committees. In fact, none of them. You just need to analyze that the committees are empty. All the main projects are on an urgent basis for plenary. Not even the CCJ has fulfilled its role of making a deeper analysis of projects. What has remained in the committees are projects that are of most interest to deputies”, stated the PT president.

She also once again criticized the Bolsonaro parliamentarians who will preside over the committees, stating that they will just be “making speeches, calling for [de autoridades]mess, which is what they know how to do.”

“The government will continue, it will not depend on the president of the education commission, imagine, nor the CCJ. It will carry on with its life. The problem is that this goes against the house, that is what was not understood there [na escolha], it’s bad for the camera. Parliament already has a negative evaluation in society, a low evaluation, so it places people at this level, of this quality, who have no preparation, no stature”, he added.
