Gleisi says that Pacheco favors the “extreme right” when drafting the PEC that limits the STF

The national president of the PT, federal deputy Gleisi Hoffmann (PR), stated this Tuesday (24) that the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), “is doing a service for the extreme right” by guiding the Proposal of Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) that limits individual decisions of ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF). The expectation is that the Senate plenary will begin analyzing PEC 8/2021 this afternoon.

“We do need the Powers of the Republic to act in harmony, but PEC 08, which is on the agenda in the Senate, limiting the scope of STF decisions is not a good way to achieve this objective. Especially in a situation in which the Supreme Court has played a prominent role in defending Democracy. The search for harmony takes place through dialogue and the strengthening of powers, through the daily exercise of each person’s constitutional role”, said the parliamentarian in the social network.

Gleisi also criticized the text’s processing in the Senate. Pacheco has already declared that he is in favor of processing the PEC and argued that the focus of the proposal is to make the actions of the STF and other higher courts even more legitimate in the eyes of society. “The hasty way in which PEC 08 has been processed seems like retaliation that diminishes the Senate. Unfortunately, Senator Rodrigo Pacheco is doing a service for the extreme right”, added the deputy.

At the beginning of this month, the Senate’s Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) approved the proposal authored by the leader of Podemos, senator Oriovisto Guimarães (PR). The text limits the monocratic decisions of the Supreme Court and sets a single deadline for requests for review of trials. According to Guimarães, the objective of the project is to create a balance between powers and legal security.
