Gleisi reaffirms the name of Boulos to the City of SP in 2024 – 07/19/2023 – Power

With the support of Lula, the president of the PT, deputy Gleisi Hoffmann, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to support the candidacy of Guilherme Boulos (PSOL) for the Prefecture of São Paulo in 2024.

In a message to the PT group opposed to Boulos’ name, Gleisi states that “tergiversations now only help the current mayor [Ricardo Nunes] candidate for re-election” and the right.

At the meeting of the party’s electoral working group on June 27, Gleisi was questioned about the soundness of the agreement with Boulos and also about the agreements in favor of the reelection of the mayors of Rio, Eduardo Paes (PSD), and of Recife, João Campos (PSB).

At that meeting, described as tough, Gleisi recalled having accompanied the construction of the pact by which Boulos gave up the race for the Palácio dos Bandeirantes last year, in favor of the candidacy of the current Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad (PT).

In addition to Haddad himself, this agreement was endorsed by Lula, at the time a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic. In no other city is alliance articulation for municipal succession so advanced.

“This agreement was widely publicized. No one, not one party leader, stood up against it. Now they come to question it? This type of questioning, pretense, only serves the current mayor, who is a candidate for re-election. It serves the right”, says Gleisi, emphasizing that Ricardo Nunes is a candidate for Bolsonaristas.

For Gleisi, this is an opportunity to reverse the situation in which the right is dominating. Still according to her, the PT has no natural name for the dispute. “There is no other name that has the stature of Boulos to compete.”

“We cannot forget that we are going to run against the mayor who is supported by Bolsonaro and we have a governor [Tarcísio de Freitas, do Republicanos] highly supported by Bolsonaro, including a pre-candidate for President of the Republic. So we have to be sensible,” he says.

The questions to the agreement are headed by the PT’s Secretary of Communication, Jilmar Tatto, by the Secretary of International Relations, Romênio Pereira, and by federal deputy Washington Quaquá (RJ), vice-president of the acronym.

According to participants, in these meetings, Tatto does not hide resentment with the role of PT leaders in the 2020 elections, when he did not reach 9% of the votes in the race for São Paulo City Hall.

He would complain of abandonment and betrayal by President Lula and even Gleisi. He would also blame the current PT president for leaking the call for a meeting with the aim of convincing him to give up the dispute in the first round – which the party president has always denied.

As for Lula, the complaint refers to the fact that he expressed sympathy for Boulos’s candidacy at the time of the vote, in São Bernardo do Campo.

“We made a large group of councilors in a very difficult election for our party throughout Brazil. Lula not only supported me, he was on my TV show, including mine. It is evident that he respects Boulos and supported him in the second round. I even think that Boulos used the image of Lula and Haddad little in the second round, and both won in the capital in 22”, he said.

Regarding the 2024 elections, the PT’s communication secretary says that the party “is debating the issue in the capital, and, in dialogue with the national leadership, should pronounce itself afterwards”. “It is important to understand that the PT is a very large party, with a history of internal differences and, even so, a lot of unity when it comes to disputing the votes.”

When talking about the consequences of the 2020 municipal dispute, Gleisi says that they are water under the bridge and defends the strengthening of the political field for next year’s elections.

For Quaquá, however, the alliance with Boulos is harmful to the PT. At meetings, he goes so far as to state that a right-wing candidacy would cause less damage to the party. “I think support for Boulos is bad for the PT,” he told the Sheet.

Another member of this group, Romanio recalls at meetings that PSOL, Boulos’ party, did not support the approval of the fiscal framework in the Chamber of Deputies, not being a faithful ally.
