Gleisi compares Lula to Pope Francis

In a speech during the 26th meeting of the São Paulo Forum, this Thursday (29), in Brasília (DF), the president of the Workers’ Party (PT), Gleisi Hoffmann, compared President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to Pope Francis.

“It is also essential to pay homage to two global leaders who stand out in the fight against inequality and hunger, in defense of the world’s excluded people and the preservation of the planet’s environment and climate: Pope Francis and President Lula”, said Gleisi Hoffmann.

The PT president was responsible for starting the opening speeches of the São Paulo Forum meeting. Leftist parties from Latin America and the Caribbean will gather in Brasilia until the weekend for the organization’s annual meeting. In his speech, Gleisi also spoke about the integration of Latin American and Caribbean countries.

“Our integration is a very important part of building a new world, an urgent and increasingly strong debate, for overcoming the immense and indecent inequalities on our planet”, he said.

In his speech, Gleisi praised the work of the leftist organization and criticized the countries that implemented sanctions against countries led by dictators: “Foro de São Paulo has always contributed to the construction of a democratic global order, for defending dialogue and denouncing unilateral, political, military or economic intervention in our countries, the most cruel example of which is the US blockade of Cuba,” he said.

Founded in 1990 by Lula and former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, the Foro de São Paulo (FSP) was created with the aim of uniting the Latin American left after the collapse of the Soviet Union. In 33 years, the organization has consolidated itself as a force that tries to impose leftist agendas on the subcontinent, supporting criminal groups such as the FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) and turning a blind eye to dictatorships.

Currently, 123 parties from 27 countries are members of the Forum. On Brazilian soil, according to the organization’s website, the Workers’ Party (PT), the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB), the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB) and the Democratic Labor Party (PDT) are on the list of members of the group. Sought by the report, however, the PDT advisory reported that it is no longer part of the group, even though the party’s name is on the list of members on the Foro de São Paulo website.
