The ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Gilmar Mendes and of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) Antonio Carlos Ferreira took office this Tuesday (13) as substitute ministers of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
Last month, Mendes was symbolically elected by the Supreme Court to hold the position. It is the minister’s third visit to the Electoral Court, which he presided over in 2006 and 2016, informed Agência Brasil; Antonio Carlos Ferreira was chosen on the 9th of May to compose the vacancy for members of the STJ opened due to the death of Minister Paulo de Tarso Sanseverino, on the 8th of April.
The president of the TSE, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, celebrated the inauguration of his colleagues. “It is a great joy for the Electoral Justice to have the experience of Minister Gilmar Mendes, who returns for the third passage in this House in which he was president twice. Minister Antonio Carlos Ferreira, from São Paulo, is a friend who comes to join the Democracy Court, and the presence of so many people here today demonstrates the prestige of the Electoral Justice”, he said.
In addition to Gilmar Mendes, ministers Dias Toffoli and André Mendonça also make up the vacancies of substitute ministers from the STF. The effective vacancies belong to Alexandre de Moraes, current president, Cármen Lúcia and Nunes Marques.
