This Thursday morning was the definition of Group H of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, played in Australia and New Zealand. For the first time in history, Germany did not qualify for the Round of 16. In a tense game, South Korea took the lead on the scoreboard and even took the tie, but held the Germans, who produced little.
In the other match, Morocco surprised and beat Colombia 1-0. The defeat, however, did not prevent the South American team from moving on to the knockout stage along with the African team. The Colombians are the only South American representatives still playing in the tournament.
GERMANY FALL INTO THE GROUP STAGE FOR THE FIRST TIME
Two-time world champions, the Germans entered the game against South Korea under pressure. After the defeat against Colombia, a victory was all they needed to go through the stage. The Asians, however, surprised and, after six minutes, opened the scoring.
Germany even managed to tie the game with a goal by Popp at the end of the first half, but the European team was nervous and could not impose its superiority. Better for the South Koreans, who withstood German pressure until the last minute of injury time and won their only point in the competition. With the draw, the two-time world champion went four points and is out of the knockout phase of the tournament for the first time in history.
MOROCCO ADVANCES
Morocco frustrated the dream of a perfect Colombian campaign and won the match against the South Americans by 1-0. The result was guaranteed after a penalty kick in the first-half stoppage time. Striker Chebbak missed the kick, but Lahmari scored on the rebound and secured the advantage for the Africans.
Colombia tried to equalize during the second half, but stopped in the great performance of goalkeeper Er-Rmichi. The result, however, was great for both teams. The South Americans ranked first in the group and the Moroccans came in second. In the next phase, Colombia faces Jamaica and Morocco takes on France.
