General says he visited Mauro Cid ‘to see if it helped’ – 07/13/2023 – Politics

Former Director of Logistics at the Ministry of Health, reserve general Ridauto Lúcio Fernandes visited, in May, Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid in prison. The meeting had “personal” motivation, “to see if he could help with something”, and Cid was moved during the conversation, the general told the Sheet.
Ridauto said he tried to re-enter the Brasília Army Police Battalion, where Bolsonaro’s former assistant is being held, but was barred. That’s because visits were allowed to a few people, such as lawyers and Cid’s wife, after the number of visitors increased a lot.
Former President Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) chief aide-de-camp, Cid has been visited by at least 73 people since he was arrested on May 3.
The number was criticized by Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF (Federal Supreme Court), responsible for determining the arrest of the military. “In this specific case, the number of visits received is very high, indicating a lack of reasonableness in relation to authorizations for visits to Mauro Cid”, wrote the minister in a dispatch revealed by TV Globo.
General Ridauto participated in the coup events on January 8. He said he did not support the destruction of the headquarters of the three Powers or invade public buildings.
On the day of the acts, Ridauto recorded a video, at the Esplanada dos Ministérios, stating that he had “goosebumps” and that the police had thrown gas at the demonstrators.
He stated that he visited Cid on the afternoon of 9 May. The meeting lasted from 30 to 40 minutes, as there were “other visitors scheduled”, according to the general.
The former director of the Ministry of Health said he was stopped, days before, when he tried to visit Cid without an appointment. So he made an appointment.
Ridauto and Cid worked together at the Army’s Special Operations Command in Goiânia.
“When I saw that he was going through this difficult time [por causa da prisão], I immediately went looking for him to see if I could help with anything, especially with family issues or even discussing the case I was experiencing, to clarify my thoughts. The visit was great, motivating for both, “he said.
The reserve general stated that he did not get to talk to Cid about the arrest, because of the limited visit time.
“I told him that many, many people believed in his propriety and character and that I would tell them about the visit. He was thrilled,” he said. “More recently, I tried to repeat the dose, but there was a limitation of visits only to family members and lawyers, and I couldn’t.”
The list of visitors was obtained by the CPI on January 8, where Cid testified on Tuesday (11). He was dressed and remained silent.
The document indicates that Cid was visited by General Júlio César de Arruda, dismissed from command of the Army by Lula (PT) in January, less than a month after taking office.
Another visitor was Army Colonel Jean Lawand Júnior, Cid’s main interlocutor in the coup messages highlighted by the Federal Police after Lula’s victory.
In a note, the Army said that “the visits must take place by appointment and prior authorization, preferably in the afternoon”. He also stated that the list of visitors was delivered, under secrecy, to the STF.
The Army did not confirm how many people visited Cid and whether meetings were limited.
Cid was also visited by General Eduardo Pazuello (PL-RJ), federal deputy and former Minister of Health, and by Fábio Wajngarten, former Secretary of Communication for the Presidency.
Wajngarten told Sheet that Cid has been in prison for 70 days “without any reason justifying his preventive detention”. “For everyone to understand, this is about arresting someone and throwing away the key.”
Cid was arrested as part of the investigation surrounding the falsification of his vaccination card, his wife, Bolsonaro’s youngest daughter, Laura, and the former president himself.
