Reserve general Marcos Antonio Amaro accepted the invitation made by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) invited him to head the GSI (Institutional Security Office).
Lula had already indicated to ministers, last week, that he would do so. The official invitation took place during a meeting on the morning of this Wednesday (3), at the Planalto Palace, with the presence of the Minister of Defense, José Múcio Monteiro.
Amaro has a close relationship with former president Dilma Rousseff (PT). Ties with the former president were created when the general took over as Secretary of Presidential Security in 2010 —a role he held for five years.
The general also participated in the process of creating the Casa Militar, in 2015, being appointed head of the body by Dilma. He left office after the impeachment process against the president.
Lula’s decision is a victory for a wing of his government, led by Múcio, who defended that the portfolio continued under the command of the military.
The military will take over the post left by General Gonçalves Dias, who resigned after the release of images from the security circuit of the Planalto Palace recorded during the January 8 coup attacks.
Better known as G.Dias, he was the first casualty of the Lula government. He was personally appointed by the president, with whom he had been friends for over two decades. Amaro, in turn, is indicated by the commander of the Army, General Tomás Paiva.
The acceptance of the invitation occurs on the same day that Lula will be received with ceremonies for a lunch at the Army headquarters with the High Command.
