Former minister Geddel Vieira Lima, who was caught with R$51 million hidden in an apartment in Salvador in 2017, admitted that the money would be used for the Bahia government election campaign in 2018. The statement was given to a podcast and released this weekend by the magazine Look.
According to the former minister, who held the National Integration portfolio in the Lula 2 government (PT) and the Government Secretariat in Michel Temer’s (MDB), said that he made a “serious mistake” and that he is “paying the price ” for having stored the money in an apartment rented in his name. Geddel, however, did not reveal the origin of the resources or the eventual recipients.
“I recognize that my serious mistake was to have placed the desire to become governor of Bahia above that vision. I’m paying the price. […] What was the alternative? He was going to have to call 500 people here to explain himself. I didn’t want it, I don’t want it and I’m going to die without wanting it. Let me carry on carrying what my fate, circumstance and inability have placed on my shoulders.”
Geddel also told the podcast that he may return to politics even with the conviction for the money found by the police. He made a parallel to the situation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who was also arrested and returned to the Planalto Palace.
“It is up to the voter to decide whether he wants to or not. Lula spent 580 days in the xylindró. Sometimes people ask me: ‘What’s your difference to Lula?’ We passed the same hotel ”, he said referring to the prison.
Geddel was arrested in 2017 during Operation Cui Bono, triggered by the delation of money changer Lúcio Funaro. The following month, the Federal Police seized eight suitcases and four boxes with cash during Operation Lost Treasure.
