Expert points out that there is a possibility of a lack of drinking water for part of the population of Amazonas

Manaus (AM) – The announcement of the possible lack of gas in Manaus raised awareness of the possibility of a lack of basic inputs in Amazonas.

After the gas distributor, Fogás, informed that the gas stock in the distributors would only be sufficient for the next 10 days, the Amazônia Refinery (Ream) clarified that there was no risk of kitchen gas shortages, an announcement reinforced by the Companhia de Gás do Amazonas (Cigás).

According to Ream, there is no risk of cooking gas shortages in the city of Manaus, even amid the difficulties imposed by the severe drought that limits navigation in the Amazon rivers. The refinery also informed that all measures to guarantee the production and supply of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) to distributors in Manaus during the drought were adopted.

Still according to the refinery, the gas, to meet the demand in Manaus, is being loaded at the Urucu oil hub with the help of tank barges capable of crossing the section with navigation restrictions and being transported to Manaus via tanker.

The Amazonas Gas Company (Cigás) also issued a note about the situation that concerns Amazonian citizens.

“The Amazonas Gas Company (Cigás) informs that the severe drought affecting the state does not impact the natural gas supply system, which is carried out through underground pipeline infrastructure, allowing continuous supply of the fuel“, says note.

Currently, Cigás has a distribution network of 262 kilometers and more than 17 thousand contracted consumer units in the thermoelectric, industrial, vehicle, commercial, residential and self-generation/liquefaction segments.

Drought in Amazonas

All the instability and fear that plagues the population is due to the drought that is currently affecting the Amazon. Economist Denise Kassama pointed out that a possible lack of gas could be a sign of a lack of other basic inputs, such as water.

“The rivers are impassable, this eventual lack of gas, in my opinion, is a harbinger that if there is a lack of gas, other things could really be lacking due to the drought and the impassability of the rivers. We have to consider that the river still has at least a month to go down even further. Everything we consume effectively comes from abroad, I even participated in an activity where the director of the Civil Defense of Manaus was there and there is a risk of water shortages for the city of Manaus”,

declared the economist.

Kassama warns about the density of the water in the Rio Negro and the impossibility of its use and consumption.

“The water in the Rio Negro is already denser, due to the heat and can reach a level where it is impossible to use and consume. There is little prudence, we have to be careful. We are not just talking about an economic event, but also a natural event that may or may not intensify in the coming days. People in Manauara have to take precautions, fill their pantries, save resources, because it could get worse in October”,

Emergency situation

At the end of last month, Governor Wilson Lima decreed a state of emergency in 55 municipalities in Amazonas affected by the severe drought that has hit the state and announced other measures to reinforce government actions, which are already underway, through “Operation Drought 2023”. The decree is valid for 180 days and covers 55 cities.
