The company Fugini will be able to manufacture all its products again at the plant in Monte Alto (SP). The place was banned for two weeks, between March and April, after Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) found expired annatto in the manufacture of mayonnaise.

At the time, Fugini attributed the fact to an “operational error” and announced the recall of batches of mayonnaise that contained the ingredient out of date. The recall remains, but the company has released the manufacture of all products.

On March 27, the agency suspended Fugini’s activities in Monte Alto and requested that the mayonnaise containing expired annatto be collected. Two weeks later, after an inspection, Anvisa released the manufacture, distribution and sale of products, with the exception of those with substances that cause food allergies or their derivatives. This Thursday (7), the agency ended this last impediment.

According to Anvisa’s resolution, the company carried out the requested measures for food quality control and was released after an inspection carried out on May 19. Fugini will also be able to sell products manufactured until March 27, 2023 that are still within the expiration date.

However, the recall of mayonnaise batches by Fugini and the Ramy brand expiring in January, February and March 2024 or expiring in December 2023, whose batch numbering starts at 354, was maintained.

The company has until July 29 to complete the collection of products. The consumer who purchased the items must contact Fugini’s SAC (Customer Service) at 0800-7024337, from Monday to Friday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, or at [email protected] to carry out the exchange the product or get a refund.

In a note, Fugini advised customers to contact the company in case of doubt. “Fugini Alimentos, a reference company in the sector with 27 years of experience in the market, reiterates its commitment to quality, safety and good manufacturing practices for its products”, he said.

Foreign objects in tomato sauce

According to Anvisa, the inspection in Monte Alto (SP) – which resulted in the detection of mayonnaise with expired annatto – was carried out after reports of “foreign matter” found in Fugini’s tomato sauces in December 2022 in Rio Grande do Sul.

After complaints from four consumers in different cities, the ready-made sauces were sent for analysis. According to the pathology laboratory of the IPG/RS (General Institute of Expertise of Rio Grande do Sul), the products contained fungi, spores and fragments of parasite eggs.

Last week, delegate Jeiselaure de Souza, from the 1st Police Station in Viamão (RS), indicted Fugini, two partners and an employee responsible for the technical quality control of products for a crime against the consumer relationship. The inquiry was sent to the Justice of Rio Grande do Sul, which will decide whether to accept the complaint.

In a note, the company denies contamination in the products, claiming that the analyzed packaging had been open since December 2022. “As stated on the packaging, the company recommends that, to maintain its quality, the product must be kept under refrigeration and used within a day, since it does not contain preservatives in its recipe. In addition, one of the analyzed samples even had an expired expiration date.”

The company also contested the reports made by the IPG/RS. “They did not have microbiological exams, a scientifically adequate methodology to arrive at a possible result on the analyzed sample”, informed Fugini, who claimed to have sent sealed products from the same batches to Lacen-RS (Central Public Health Laboratory) and that the results “proved the safety” of tomato sauce.
