French president says he will put pressure on Mbappé to stay in the country

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday he would push for Paris Saint-Germain and France star Kylian Mbappé to remain in the country, amid commotion over his possible departure from the Parisian club.
“I have no first fruits, but I will press for it,” Macron said during a visit to the VivaTech technology fair, after a journalist asked him if he knew anything about Mbappe’s stay in the French capital.
Despite being a well-known fan of PSG’s great rivals, Olympique de Marseille, Macron was already involved in 2022 in an attempt to guarantee the 24-year-old striker’s permanence in France, when he was about to sign for Real Madrid.
On that occasion, Macron justified his decision to meddle in the case, assuring that a president’s duty is “to defend his country”.
Months later, the player himself explained that what Macron did was emphasize his importance to France.
Last Monday, the player confirmed his desire not to renew his contract and leave the Parisian club at the end of next season, without activating the extension option until 2025.
PSG, for its part, does not seem willing to allow its main player, one of the best in the world today, to leave for free.
“The door will be open. We have started phase 2 of the new project, which is based on the collective and not on the individual. If we have to rebuild, we will do it”, said a club source today to the French newspaper “L’Équipe”.
