Regarding the Equatorial Margin, Ibama denied authorization for the study of oil exploration at the mouth of the Amazon River, on the coast of Amapá. There was a big controversy, with governors and businessmen supporting Petrobras.
For Fábio Feldemann, the pre-salt potential in the region leads to an issue that society will have to decide. “Fossil fuel burning is the main cause of global warming. Scientists around the world have pointed out that we have to give up oil. This poses a challenge for the world to replace fossil fuels. The energy matrix in Brazil is an example of the large participation of hydroelectricity”.
“Many countries, such as Norway, which finances the Amazon Fund, are oil exporters. Countries have to give up, but they are not. Global warming is increasing, Brazilian agriculture may suffer from changes in the rainfall regime. In the case of Ibama, I think it was analyzed from some technical perspectives of viability. I don’t think it’s trivial or easy (the decision) because it has a GDP potentially buried at the mouth, which everyone sees as a perspective of income generation and tax collection. I think that this decision does not have to be made by the Lula government or Congress, the population has to be consulted, by plebiscite or referendum, which would allow the two sides to debate”, finished.
