Former Tebet advisor criticizes Lula for wanting to discuss new spending limit

Economist Daniel Couri, former deputy secretary of the Ministry of Planning, from Simone Tebet, criticized President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s (PT) statement about discussing a new expenditure limit this Friday (8). He is currently program director at the Executive Secretariat of the Ministry of Planning.

For the X networkformerly Twitter, Couri shared an article from the newspaperal O Globo which informs the Lula government’s intention to discuss a new spending limit with the National Congress, in a scenario of increased revenues. The president said that the eventual change could be considered as “collection is increasing beyond what many people expected”.

“Pure sophistry. And it’s not like we are in a comfortable fiscal situation. Very bad signal,” said Couri about the possibility highlighted by Lula.

Since last year, President Lula has been defending the expansion of spending and investment, which could impact the government’s fiscal responsibility, while the economic team has sought to eliminate the deficit in public accounts this year.

According to the Federal Revenue Service, revenue increased by 6.7% and reached R$280 billion in January this year. The result was the highest monthly collection recorded in the entire historical series, which began in 1995.

The fiscal framework, approved last year, limited the increase in spending to 70% of the real increase in revenue. In addition, the new standard determines that, to avoid rigidity in expenses, every year it will grow at least 0.6% and at most 2.5%, based on the real variation in revenue.
