Former secretary of the Ministry of Economy, Caio Megale told the Panel that he will return a luxury Cartier watch that he won on an official trip to Doha, Qatar, in October 2019.
Currently chief economist at XP, Megale wrote this Monday (6) a letter to the Ministry of Finance asking for information on the procedures he should adopt to relinquish the object.
The watch was delivered to him at his office in Brasília, by an aide to the Presidency of the Republic, in early December 2019, just over a month after the trip.
After receiving the object, Megale contacted the Public Ethics Commission of the Presidency to find out if he could keep the gift. Cartier brand watches have values in the tens of thousands of reais.
Last year, the commission informed that the object did not need to be returned. Still, the economist claims that he chose not to use the watch, which was kept in its original packaging.
Last Wednesday (1st), the Federal Court of Auditors notified the Ethics Commission and said that receiving expensive gifts goes beyond public “principles of reasonability and morality”.
In addition to Megale, watches were also received on the same trip by former Bolsonarist ministers Gilson Machado (Tourism), Osmar Terra (Citizenship), Ernesto Araújo (Foreign Relations) and the former president of Apex (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency). Sergio Segovia Barbosa.
