Former PM chief puts colonel in investigations of coup acts – 01/17/2023 – Politics

The testimony of the former general commander of the Military Police of the Federal District Fabio Augusto Vieira, arrested after the acts of depredation in the Praça dos Três Poderes, placed another officer of the corporation, Colonel Jorge Eduardo Naime, in the focus of the investigations of the Federal Police .

The colonel’s lawyer, Gustavo Mascarenhas told the Sheet that the military police officer started the period of reward leave on January 3rd and is expected to end on the 8th.

He stated that Naime was out of Brasília and that he had anticipated his return to the city at the request of the Palácio do Buriti and the then deputy general commander of the PM, Colonel Klepter Rosa, so that he would be part of the ongoing operation to contain the coup leaders in the Esplanada dos Ministérios.

According to Mascarenhas, Naime went to the scene around 6 pm, aiming to help restore order. From the moment he started to coordinate the operation, said the lawyer, his client followed the protocol for emptying public buildings.

“Colonel Naime, since he arrived on the stage of the events, coordinated the operation, aiming to minimize the damage. He acted in accordance with the technique and the law. He carried out all the arrests within reach of the number of troops and material conditions with which he had at the time, always seeking to ensure the safety of everyone —civilian and military—, as far as possible,” the defense said in a statement.

In April 2021, Naime took over as head of the PM’s Operational Department. He also occupies the position of president of Asof-PMDF (Association of Military Police Officers of the DF).

In his statement to the PF, the former general commander said that the Shock Battalion was called in and had been in place since before the attack and siege. “There was a Shock Battalion and ROTAM on the S1 road and on the N1 road [avenidas que cortam a Esplanada dos Ministérios]behind Itamaraty, in addition to the cavalry,” he said.

The PM has been criticized for placing low troops on the Esplanada dos Ministérios, without riot police teams ready to quell the demonstrations.

In his defense at the STF, the removed governor Ibaneis Rocha (MDB) stated that the security plan was sabotaged and that this allowed the coup plotters to invade the headquarters of the Three Powers.

“The fact is that, at some point, in terms of execution, the previously established protocol was unusually breached, allowing or facilitating the unbelievable and irremissible acts of violence practiced against the Powers of the Republic and against the democratic State of Law”, says the document, signed by a team of lawyers led by Alberto Toron.
