Foot and Mouth Disease: Amapá achieves highest immunization rate in the last nine years – News of Brazil
[ad_1]
Amapá guaranteed a 97.32% immunization rate for cattle and buffalo herds in the 2023 Foot and Mouth Disease Vaccination Campaign, launched by the State Government. It is the highest percentage in the last nine years. In 2022, the index was 95.12%.
The information was released this Tuesday, 20th, by the Agricultural Defense and Inspection Agency (Diagro), which counted 355 thousand animals immunized from October to December 2023.
The numbers also exceeded the target set by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), which was 90%. The highlights of vaccination are the municipalities of Cutias do Araguari, Oiapoque, Pedra Branca do Amapari, Serra do Navio and Vitória do Jari, which achieved 100% vaccination coverage of the herd.
“To reach these numbers, we focused on specific points and on strengthening teams in municipalities that presented difficulties in previous campaigns. We work very closely with the livestock farmers’ association and we had the campaign extended due to drought problems, all of which contributes to our success in this process”, highlighted the CEO of Diagro, Alvaro Cavalcante.
Vaccination actions against foot-and-mouth disease took place in 1,441 rural properties, of which 157 were monitored by Diagro teams, in the 16 municipalities.
Governor Clécio Luís launched the campaign on October 1st, during the 52nd Expofeira. The action would end on November 30th, however, due to weather problems, the deadline was extended until December 30th, 2023, with the presentation of a vaccine declaration until January 15th.
Free from foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination
During the vaccination period, Amapá achieved the status ‘free of foot and mouth without vaccination’, which should be formalized in the first half of this year by Mapa, a Federal Government agency.
The certification will allow Amapá producers to sell beef and buffalo meat to other Brazilian states and even other countries, strengthening the economy and economic development.
Currently, Amapá has the second largest herd of buffaloes in the country, which represents an opportunity to strengthen the local economy through meat exports.
Even with the end of the campaign, Mapa and Diagro open a period until April 30th for producers who, for some reason, have not yet vaccinated the herd, that is, the numbers must still increase and consolidate the highest vaccination rate of all campaigns.
