Follow live the trial that will define Bolsonaro’s political future

The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) resumes this Friday (30) the judgment that could make former president Jair Bolsonaro ineligible until 2030. form a majority against Bolsonaro. Of the four ministers who have already voted, all decided to release the vice-president, Walter Braga Netto, from the accusations.

The first to vote in this session will be Minister Cármen Lúcia. If she understands that Bolsonaro abused political power by holding a meeting with ambassadors in July 2022 to question the security of the electoral system, she will form a majority to condemn the former president. Ministers Kassio Nunes Marques, nominated by Bolsonaro, and Alexandre de Moraes, president of the Electoral Court, will also vote this Friday.

So far, only Minister Raul Araújo has voted for the ex-president’s acquittal. For him, the Electoral Court should limit itself to judging the real consequences of the fact and intervene only when strictly necessary to guarantee the sovereignty of electoral suffrage.

This is the fourth trial session against the Bolsonaro-Braga Netto ticket. The first was dedicated to reading the action report, presentations by the prosecution and defense lawyers and reading the opinion of the Attorney General’s Office (PGE).

The second session was fully occupied by the reading of the vote of the rapporteur for the action, Benedito Gonçalves, who voted for Bolsonaro’s ineligibility for eight years and also asked that the case be forwarded to the Federal Audit Court (TCU), to the Attorney General’s Office Republic (PGR) and ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), paving the way for other possible convictions against the former president.

In the third session, held this Thursday (29), the votes of ministers Raul Araújo, who voted for acquittal, Floriano Azevedo and André Tavares, who voted for Bolsonaro’s conviction.

Bolsonaro and Braga Netto are accused of abuse of political power and misuse of the media due to a meeting with foreign diplomats, held on July 18, 2022.
