Folha turns 103 years old and launches campaign for clean energy – 02/18/2024 – Power

Upon turning 103 years old this Monday (19), the Sheet launches a campaign for the expansion of clean energy in Brazil. The energy transition agenda will be present in the newspaper’s slogan and will be the subject of seminars and new columns.

There will also be more extensive coverage on the subject, with reports and interviews in text and video, mobilizing the newspaper’s teams in São Paulo, Brasília and Rio de Janeiro, as well as correspondents in other cities in the country and abroad.

As the Writing Manual recommends, Sheet carries out campaigns “in special situations, when it directs its efforts to promote a certain cause that it deems to be in the public interest”. In 2020, for example, the newspaper defended the use of the color yellow in favor of democracy.

“Diversity, inequality and the climate crisis are mandatory topics in a country like Brazil, therefore mandatory agendas for Sheet. One of the ways to mitigate the impact of the third item is through clean energy, a subject that the newspaper now covers as an editorial priority”, says Editorial Director, Sérgio Dávila.

“This action is in line with the desire to increasingly become a reference in economic coverage, as we already are in political coverage.”

At COP28 (28th UN Conference on Climate Change), which ended in December, more than 190 countries agreed for the world to triple renewable energy and double energy efficiency by 2030.

The planet added 50% more capacity in clean energy generation in 2023 compared to the previous year, with the predominance of solar and wind sources, the most promising in Brazil. In other words, the evident environmental urgency is directly associated with a new scenario in the country’s economy.

From this Monday (19), the Sheet adopts the slogan “A newspaper in defense of clean energy”, always displayed at the top of the first page of the printed version and the main page of its website. Until the 104th anniversary, at least, the new slogan will replace the traditional “Um newspaper at the service of Brazil”, used since 1961. Furthermore, the red thread located below the slogan changes to green on all platforms and gets an illustration alluding to the theme.

The newspaper now has an online page focused on reports, interviews and articles regarding the energy transition. On TV Folha, the program “Como É que É?” will address the topic once a week.

The broad universe surrounding clean energy will also be the focus of the analyzes in two new columns, both published every two weeks.

Former president of companies such as Light, Aneel and Sabesp, engineer Jerson Kelman starts writing this Tuesday (20) in the online version and the following day in print. Next week, the debutant is Ricardo Mussa, CEO of Raízen, a bioenergy company and main manufacturer of sugarcane ethanol, as well as leader of the B20 Brazil Energy Transition and Climate task force.

Kelman and Mussa are among the guests at the seminar Clean energy: the energy transition in Brazil, which takes place this Monday, from 9 am to 1 pm. In addition to them, names such as Adriana Waltrick, president of the energy generator SPIC Brasil, Ricardo Bastos, president of ABVE (Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association), and Luciana Costa, director of Infrastructure, Energy Transition and Climate Change at BNDES (National Bank of Economic and Social Development).

The event will be broadcast live on this page and on the Sheet on Youtube.

Over the next few months, the newspaper will expand its coverage of topics such as advances in the production of electric vehicles, the expansion of wind farms and solar plants and new green hydrogen projects. Through texts and infographics, the Sheet It will also present x-rays of the renewable energy market and the main polluting activities in Brazil and the world.

Interviews with CEOs of energy companies and companies that are making the energy transition will be published regularly, in text and video.

A Sheet It also launches a weekly newsletter, which will bring together the main texts and videos on the topic.

The fact of dealing with clean energy within the scope of a campaign does not imply the newspaper’s departure from its editorial project. “The principle of pluralism remains in force even during campaigns. This means that, even in these situations, the Sheet is obliged to publish points of view contrary to the positions he defends”, determines the Manual.
