Flamengo announced on Friday night (14) the hiring of Argentine coach Jorge Sampaoli, 63, who had been unemployed since he was fired from Sevilla, Spain.
Having played in Brazilian football from 2019 to 2021, when he trained Santos and Atlético Mineiro, he will join the Gávea team to take the place of the Portuguese Vitor Pereira, who was sacked on Tuesday (11) after accumulating failures such as losing the title state and the loss to Al Hilal in the semifinal of the Club World Cup.
There was an expectation from most fans that the also Portuguese Jorge Jesus would return to the club for which he won five titles between 2019 and 2020, but he will remain at Fenerbahçe.
On Twitter, in addition to making Sampaoli’s arrival official, Flamengo reported that his contract will run until the end of 2024.
The Argentine is in Spain, where he finalizes the procedures after his departure from Sevilla. His arrival is expected this weekend.
This Sunday (16), the team from Rio de Janeiro debuts in the Brazilian Championship against Coritiba, at 4 pm, at the Maracanã stadium, still under the command of interim Mário Jorge.
With him on the edge of the pitch, Flamengo is coming off a 2-0 defeat by Maringá, in the first leg for the third phase of the Copa do Brasil, on Thursday (13).
