Five sports are included in the 2028 Olympics – 10/13/2023 – Sports

The IOC (International Olympic Committee) announced this Friday (13) that five new sports will be part of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, United States, in 2028.

Cricket, the most popular sport in India, which currently hosts the World Cup, will return to the program. He made a single appearance at the Olympics in 1900, in the Paris edition.

Baseball and softball (a similar version of the sport played by women), squash, lacrosse (a game similar to field hockey, but with sticks that have a net at the end) and flag-football (a type of non-contact American football) were also included on the agenda for the Los Angeles Olympics.

Baseball has already been presented in several previous editions of the Games, the first of which was in Barcelona 1992. The sport returned to the Olympic program in Tokyo 2020, after being left out in 2012 and 2016, but will not be part of the Paris Games in 2024.

Each host city, in accordance with IOC rules, can request the inclusion of several sports for the edition of the Games they will host.

For the five sports to be officially confirmed, the decision still needs to be ratified next Monday (16) during a meeting of IOC directors.

If confirmed, there will be 35 sports to be played at the Games, a record in Olympic history. Until then, Tokyo-2021 was the edition with the largest number of disputes, with 33 sports.

“The inclusion [das modalidades esportivas] will allow the Olympic movement to engage with new athletes and fan communities in the United States and globally,” said Thomas Bach, IOC President.

Although the inclusion of the five new sports is only for one edition of the Games, the expectation of practitioners is that the boost provided by Olympic participation will stimulate the growth of participants.
