This Wednesday (1st), the 27 elected senators will take office and elect the next President of the House for the 2023-2024 biennium.

The last occupant of the position was Senator Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG). He succeeded Davi Alcolumbre (DEM-AP), his political godfather in the dispute. Pacheco was also the candidate of then-President Jair Bolsonaro.

Since May 6, 1826, when it was installed at the time of the Empire, the Federal Senate has had 73 terms (counting interim terms) in the presidency of the House, which had its first headquarters in the Conde dos Arcos Palace, known as “Paço do Senado”. , in Rio de Janeiro

Guided by the Constitution of 1824, the first composition of the Senate had representatives of the nobility, the judiciary and the clergy. According to the Casa’s website, at first there were “50 senators, including 23 barons, viscounts or marquises; nine judges; seven members of the Catholic Church; four from the Army; in addition to two doctors, a lawyer and four landowners”.

One fact called attention: the princes of the Imperial House were entitled to a seat in the Senate as soon as they turned 25 years old. Thus, by this criterion, Princess Isabel became the first senator of Brazil.

In addition to the Conde dos Arcos Palace, the Senate had as its headquarters the Monroe Palace, in Rio de Janeiro, before the definitive move to Brasília.

Whoever served the most terms at the head of the Senate was José Sarney, on four occasions (1995-1997, 2003-2005, 2009-2011 and 2011-2013), and Renan Calheiros, also on four occasions (2005-2007, 2007, 2013- 2015 and 2015-2017), and in one of them (2007) he resigned from his post to avoid revocation of office for breach of decorum.

Senators have a vast number of vacancies available to house allied nominations, being able to employ them in positions of trust.
