Manaus (AM) — Free sanitary pads have been distributed to vulnerable people across the country since last January. Access to the hygiene item is via Farmácia Popular, which has 69 establishments qualified for distribution in 16 cities in Amazonas.
The initiative is part of the federal government’s Program for the Protection and Promotion of Menstrual Health and Dignity and aims to end the difficulties caused by menstrual poverty. In recent days, the booklet “Menstrual Dignity Program – a cycle of respect” was launched and is available on the Ministry of Health portal.
The material provides detailed information on how it works, the step-by-step guide to accessing the benefit, the prerequisites for participating, where and how many pads can be collected. The guide also explains how to download the Meu Sus Digital application, as it is necessary to generate authorization within the application, before going to one of the pharmacies. The supply of sanitary pads is aimed at low-income public school students, people living on the streets or in extreme vulnerability and the population housed in units of the prison system.
The program also brings strategies to raise awareness among the population and technical qualification of public agents, which have been developed by the ministry since 2023, addressing topics such as menarche (first menstruation), preventing infections, diseases and combating stigmas that involve this condition.
Who can participate
People aged between 10 and 49 years old and are registered in the federal government’s Single Registry (CadÚnico).
Additionally, you must be in one of the following situations:
- Being in a situation of extreme social vulnerability (monthly family income of up to R$218 per person);
- Be a student in the public education system and low-income (half the minimum wage);
- Being homeless, with no income limit.
What is needed to remove pads
- Present the authorization issued in the Meu SUS digital application;
- Bring identification document with photo and CPF.
Who can I turn to in case of difficulties accessing the program?
You can get help at the nearest Basic Health Unit (UBS). The unit’s professionals will be able to offer guidance and, if necessary, print the Menstrual Dignity Program authorization for the interested person.
Additionally, other channels can be used for assistance:
- Dial Health 136;
- Social Assistance Reference Centers – CRAS and CREAS;
- Public elementary or secondary schools, both municipal, state and federal;
- POP Centers, reception centers and Street Clinics; It is
