Filipinho wins stage of the world surfing circuit – News of Brazil

Filipe Toledo from São Paulo won the Sunset Beach (Hawaii) stage of the World Surfing League (WSL), his second of the season. The current world champion defeated the North American Griffin Colapinto in the final, disputed last Sunday night (19), assuming the vice-leadership of this year’s circuit, behind the Australian Jack Robinson.
The decision was balanced, with Filipinho reaching a 7.83 in the first maneuver and Colapinto nailing a 9.17 in the sequence to take the lead. The North American took a while to find new waves, saw the Brazilian take the lead again with a 3.50, but reacted with a 6.33, putting pressure on the surfer from São Paulo. The world champion, however, responded in kind, with an 8.27 that returned him to the top and even slotted in a 9.47 to seal the victory in Sunset Beach, with 17.74 to 16.10 in the sum of the two best marks of both.
The victory earned Filipinho 10,000 points in the season’s ranking. He went to 14,745 points in the classification, adding to those of fifth place in the first stage, in Pipeline (Hawaii). Robinson – who fell in the semifinals at Sunset Beach, rightly surpassed by Colapinto – leads with 16,085 points.
The also Brazilian João Chianca, defeated by Filipinho in the semifinal, finished the stage in third, repeating the result of Pipeline. Chumbinho, as the surfer from Rio is known, completes the podium of the circuit, with 12,170 points. Miguel Pupo and Gabriel Medina share eighth place (6,640), Ítalo Ferreira and Yago Dória are in 16th (4,650), Samuel Pupo and Michael Rodrigues are in 24th (2,660) and Jadson André occupies 34th place (530).
Among the women, the victory went to the Australian Molly Picklum, when she beat the North American Caroline Marks in the final. The result led the winner to lead the season, alongside Hawaiian Carissa Moore, five-time world champion, both with 14,745 points. Brazilian Tatiana Weston Webb, who fell to Caitlin Simmers, from the United States, in the round of 16, is in ninth place so far, with 7,355 points.
The next stage of the circuit will be in Peniche (Portugal), between March 8th and 16th.
