FIFA freezes Club World Cup prize, but Flamengo can earn R$ 50 million

Fifa maintained for the Club World Cup in Morocco the award of previous editions: the champion will receive US$ 5 million (R$ 25.4 million) and the runner-up, US$ 4 million (R$ 20.3 million). The tournament takes place between the 1st and 11th of February and will feature Flamengo, champion of the Libertadores, and Real Madrid, winner of the Champions League.
Brazilians, however, will be able to double the award. Conmebol announced earlier this week that it will pay Flamengo another US$ 5 million if the carioca wins the title – the last South American to win the FIFA tournament, held in this format since 2005, was Corinthians in 2012.
Flamengo could receive more than R$ 50 million adding the two awards. The 2022 World Cup, postponed to February 2023 because of the Qatar Cup held between November and December last year, will maintain the format of recent years, with seven participants. Fifa promises an expanded tournament for 32 clubs from 2025, with bigger prize pools.
The Brazilians enter the field on February 7 (16:00 GMT), already in the semifinal, against the winner of Widad Casablanca (Morocco) and Al Hilal (Saudi Arabia), who face each other on the 4th.
Real debuts on February 8 with whoever beats Seattle Sounders (USA) and Al Ahly (Egypt) or Auckland City (New Zealand). The regulation kept the limit of 23 registered players – there was expectation among the participants if the entity’s direction would increase the number to 26, as in the World Cup in Qatar.
The tournament will be broadcast by Grupo Globo, on open and closed TV (SporTV) and internet (Ge.com and Globoplay) and on the channel of streamer Casimiro Miguel on Youtube.
