Fifa (International Football Federation) has defined how vacancies in the Club World Cup will be divided by continent in 2025, the year in which the competition will have a new format. The tournament, which will take place in June and July of that year, will have the participation of 32 teams.
The entity’s board unanimously approved the following distribution: 12 vacancies for Europe, six for South America, four for Asia, four for Africa, four for Central and North America and one for Oceania.
The criteria that will be adopted by the continental confederations to determine their participants have not been established.
The remaining vacancy will remain with the host country, still undefined. The 2023 championship, in which the current format of seven teams will be maintained, will be held in Saudi Arabia, between December 12th and 22nd.
Decisions regarding other competitions were taken by the FIFA Council.
One of them was the confirmation that Canada, the United States and Mexico, hosts of the 2026 World Cup, will automatically qualify for the event. Thus, only three of the six places of Concacaf (Football Confederation of North America, Central America and the Caribbean) will be disputed in the Qualifiers.
Board members also approved the 2022 report, which pointed to record revenue in the 2019-2022 cycle: US$ 7.6 billion (R$ 39.1 billion). The projection is that the number will grow in the period 2023-2026 to US$ 11 billion (R$ 56.7 billion).
