The region of Araçatuba (SP) is the main producer of okra in the state, and Piacatu (SP) is the municipality that stands out most in this culture. Farm owner allocates all rural production for donation Reproduction/TV TEM The simplicity of country life has always fascinated Maria Ignês, a real estate agent who spent her entire childhood on the properties where her father raised cattle, in the interior of São Paulo. However, she ended up moving away from rural life when she got older. During the pandemic, the anguish of knowing that people might not have anything to eat made her approach the field again. That’s when she decided to buy a place to grow food, but not to sell it, but rather to donate it to whoever needed it. An empty area gave way to solidarity, and, from seedling to seedling, it became a plantation full of assorted fruits and vegetables, such as jabuticaba, acerola, carambola, eggplant and cassava. Maria has the help of Sebastião, an employee of the farm that was created in the countryside, and knows how to deal with the land very well. He says the harvest is always plentiful, and he doesn’t use any pesticides. All the fruits and vegetables, which are picked fresh, go from the field straight to the tables of the entities that Maria has been helping for almost four years. Among the institutions receiving donations are a nursing home that transforms cassava, received every week, into soups and broths, and a home that cares for cancer patients. Maria reports that the thank you hug she receives during donations is the best reward, not to mention the affection that motivates her to continue doing good.
