The rapporteur for the Fake News PL, Deputy Orlando Silva (PCdoB), will go to court to demand the right of reply from Telegram, which this Tuesday (9) sent a message to all its users against the project.
According to him, the big techs contest the regulation arguing that they are not content producers, but distributed a message equivalent to a newspaper editorial.
“What Telegram has done is a scandal. My team is evaluating legal options to demand a right of reply to defend Congress from the absurdities that the platform declared,” he told the Panel.
Among the points that Orlando Silva claims need repair is attributing an attempt at censorship to the project. “It’s unbelievable, not even the Constitution allows such an absurdity.”
The Telegram application sent a message to its users maintaining that “Brazil is about to pass a law that will end freedom of expression”.
According to Telegram, the bill would give the government “censorship powers without prior judicial oversight”. The company encourages users to get in touch with deputies.
Orlando said he is still working on his report to reach consensus. He is waiting for the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL) to return from a trip abroad to set a new voting date.
