Fake News PL rapporteur should look for Lira to discuss the progress of the text – 01/26/2024 – Panel

Rapporteur of the Fake News PL, deputy Orlando Silva (PCdoB-SP), must present to the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), a document summarizing the negotiations that have been carried out so far around the text.
The idea is that this will happen in the coming weeks, with the return of parliamentary activities. The document should present points that were overcome in the negotiations and highlight the differences that still exist in relation to the content of the bill.
The matter faces resistance in the Chamber of Deputies and has not been considered by parliamentarians so far. In April last year, deputies approved the PL’s urgency, but after disagreements over its content, the text stalled and fell off the voting radar.
Despite this, members of the government, parliamentarians, representatives of big tech and civil society continued talking to the rapporteur, who made adjustments to his opinion.
To interlocutors, Orlando Silva has stated that it is past time for the project to be analyzed in the Chamber plenary. In conversations, he states that the debate on fake news could be overtaken by another topic that should be on parliamentarians’ radar this year: the regulation of artificial intelligence.
According to reports, Lira signaled to interlocutors her desire to resume this debate, despite recognizing that there are difficulties to be overcome. There is an assessment that if Congress does not look into the issue, the Judiciary will end up taking some action.
