Exiles denounce Ortega’s terror in letter to Foro de SP – 06/19/2023 – Panel

In a letter to the leaders of the Foro de São Paulo, 15 of the main opponents of the Nicaraguan regime, all exiles, call Daniel Ortega, who leads the country, “the worst of the neoliberal dictators”.

The letter was sent because of the meeting of the Foro, which brings together Latin American leftist parties, scheduled for Brasília between June 29 and July 2. The Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), Ortega’s party, is one of the members of the entity.

According to the signatories of the document, Nicaragua is experiencing a “regime of terror, which daily violates all civil liberties, annihilates democracy and justice, and subjects the people to an oppression worse than that imposed by the previous dictatorship.” They refer to the regime of Anastasio Somoza, overthrown by the Sandinistas in 1980.

The document is signed by, among others, Sergio Ramírez, who was vice president during one of Ortega’s terms, the poet Gioconda Belli and the former guerrilla Dora María Téllez, one of the commanders of the revolution. All are former allies of the current dictator and have been arrested. At the beginning of the year, they were expelled from the country and had their citizenship revoked. Therefore, they sign the letter as “denationalized”.

The reference to Ortega’s “neoliberalism” is due to the fact that he tried to carry out a pension reform in 2018 that was the trigger for a series of protests in the country.

“We ask the parties and organizations that make up the Foro de São Paulo to denounce and condemn the regime of terror in Nicaragua, which is incompatible with the principles of a left that intends to be an alternative to the injustices of the world we live in”, write the opponents .
