Ex-MBL articulates to become mayor of SP – 06/04/2023 – Panel

Rubinho Nunes (União Brasil) has been holding meetings with colleagues from the São Paulo City Council to try to make his candidacy for the presidency of the House viable at the end of 2023. The councilor received the endorsement of the current president, Milton Leite, chief of the party in São Paulo , to seek support for the dispute.
Rubinho is the preferred name of the so-called G7 of Milton Leite, a block of councilors who surround the mayor. The group comprises Isac Felix (PL), Rinaldi DiGiglio (União), Sidney Cruz (Solidariedade), Thammy Miranda (PL), Marlon Luz (MDB), Marcelo Messias (MDB) and Rubinho himself.
Rubinho’s main competitor for the post is currently Ricardo Teixeira (União), who returned to the City Council in May to also seek the presidency. He had been acting as municipal secretary of Transport on the recommendation of Leite, with whom he is a close ally.
Nunes has already met with allied and opposition parliamentarians in his articulation for support. To get votes in the PT and PSOL, he will need to reverse the indisposition created by years as leader of the MBL (Movimento Brasil Libre), which he left in October last year.
Among other reasons, he decided to leave the group after disagreements regarding positioning in the second round in 2022: the MBL defended the null vote, while Nunes opted for critical support for Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
