the striker Roger Guedes was made official this Wednesday (9) as a new reinforcement of the Al Rayyan, from Qatar. Corinthians star in the season, the 26-year-old player was seduced by a millionaire proposal and got excited about the possibility of living in the Arab country, where he has been on other occasions.
At the new club, the striker will be joined by compatriots Gabriel Pereira, formerly of Corinthians and New York City, and Thiago Mendes, formerly of São Paulo and Lyon, also signed in the current transfer window. With its Brazilian reinforcements, Al Rayyan debuts in the Qatari Championship on August 17, in a duel with Al Markhiya.
Róger Guedes left Corinthians on August 1, at a crucial moment in the season, two weeks before the second leg of the Copa do Brasil semifinals against São Paulo. The departure was received with frustration and a certain amount of irritation by the Corinthians fans, who saw in the striker the potential to reach idol status, if he won a title to add to the feat of becoming the top scorer at Neo Química Arena, with 31 goals.
The transfer to the Arab world, however, took away from the player the opportunity to become a more relevant name in the club’s history. According to him, playing in Qatar was an old wish. Corinthians even made a renewal proposal, but did not have a positive return.
When he was hired in 2021, the striker made an agreement with president Duilio Monteiro Alves, who promised to release him if the athlete received an offer he couldn’t refuse from outside the country, which is precisely what happened. Even with the club willing to double his salary and buy the 60% belonging to the striker, the values were not even close to those offered by the Qatari team.
