Proposal will be submitted to financiers, through the Legal Amazon Interstate Consortium, during COP 28
Secretaries of State for the Environment of the Legal Amazon will take to the Conference of the Parties (COP 28), in Dubai, the proposal for a Regional Program for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation and Burning in the Amazon. The representatives aligned the latest adjustments to the initiative, this Thursday (9), during the second day of the 26th Legal Amazon Governors Forum, in Manaus.
The program aims at joint action between the nine states of the Brazilian Amazon, with priority on action against environmental illicit activities on political borders, areas with greater logistical difficulty of access. With a total budgeted value of R$250 million, the proposal will be submitted by the Interstate Consortium to financiers present at the COP, with the aim of raising the necessary resources for its implementation in 2024.
“We are betting a lot that capturing this resource, through the consortium, will be extremely important for us to reduce the impact, even more so with this issue related to fires, which have affected both the Amazon states and the Amazon. , affects Pará and is now affecting Maranhão. The more these climate conditions repeat themselves, the more structures we need to have to combat these anomalies”,
stated the Secretary of State for the Environment, Eduardo Taveira.
Also on Thursday (9), state secretaries and representatives discussed strategies to expand environmental regularization in the Amazon, through the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR). The agenda included representatives from the Ministry of Information Management, to highlight the next steps on the agenda.
“We have a great urgency, but above all a good expectation that we can solve the problem of analyzing the Rural Environmental Registry and, also, the commitments that producers have to assume if there is any liability to regularize their situation”, he stressed.
Class actions
Discussions between the departments highlighted the drought and fires in the Legal Amazon. According to Amapá’s Secretary of State for the Environment, Taisa Mendonça, sharing information is essential for strategies to combat climate change in the region.
“We are, in fact, living through an atypical year, a year in which all these problems are getting worse. A forum like this, in which we can all be here talking, sharing this information, sharing numbers and statistics, this makes all the difference in coping”, he explained.
Integrated work was highlighted in the topics presented. For the Deputy Secretary of the Environment of Maranhão, Joabson Costa, if the Legal Amazon Consortium acts with the isolated States, progress will not be possible.
“We want to build bridges so that we can move forward. We know that all this control of deforestation and fires does not stop in our state. They end up moving on to other neighboring states. We want this integration, mainly, to combat and be able to advance this issue”, he declared.
