Faced with the possibility of Minister Luciana Santos being removed from the Ministry of Science and Technology, coveted by the centrão in a ministerial reform, entities linked to the area released a note repudiating the change.
Although it does not name the minister, the text, signed by the boards of SBPC (Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science) and ABC (Brazilian Academy of Sciences), expresses “concern with the alarming news that the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation […] would be being coveted by those who are not committed to the causes of scientific knowledge and economic and social progress.”
“We are not talking about names, but principles. We are not going to ask for anyone’s nomination, just as we are not asking for anyone’s resignation, but it is essential that the ministry is not involved in negotiations that have nothing to do with science”, he says. the president of SPBC and former Minister of Education, Renato Janine Ribeiro.
Ribeiro, however, praises Santos’ choice: “As a deputy, she was a parliamentarian who worked for the Legal Framework for Science and was appointed by Minister Sérgio Machado Rezende, who, in President Lula’s own assessment, was the best Minister of Science that the Brazil already had”, says Ribeiro.
The support of the scientific community is one of Santos’ bets to remain in office. Another is her profile: she is a woman, black, from the Northeast and president of a party historically loyal to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), the PCdoB. Lula has not yet commented on the change in portfolio.
Other ministries led by women have already been the focus of interest for the centrão, such as Sports, led by Ana Moser, and Health, by Nísia Trindade. In Tourism, Daniela Carneiro was replaced by federal deputy Celso Sabino (União Brasil-PA).
