Entities ask that Science stay out of the reform – 08/20/2023 – Panel

Amidst the growing possibility of change in the Ministry of Science and Technology, the two main entities in the area have again put pressure on the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) for the portfolio to remain outside the ministerial reform.
In a note released this Saturday (19), the boards of the Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science (SBPC) and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) “reiterate the concern already expressed regarding the risks that the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation be subjected to partisan injunctions that ignore the decisive role that science plays for economic, social and sustainable development”.
One of the reform scenarios that have been cited involves the transfer of the Minister of Ports and Airports, Márcio França, to the Science and Technology portfolio, in order to make room for the Republicans in the government.
There is still no definition on what would be the fate of the current Minister Luciana Santos of Science, who could take over the Ministry of Women.
“We emphasize the need for a clear guarantee that the Ministry of Science remains focused on scientific knowledge and on the needs of our people. The future of Brazil cannot be linked to visions of the past”, says the document, signed by Renato Janine Ribeiro, president of SBPC, and Helena Bonciani Nader, from ABC.
