To get you closer to the maximum score and further away from the dreaded zero, the g1 consulted the Enem 2023 Writing Participant’s Handbook, produced by the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep), the body responsible for the exam, and tells you below what adds and what takes away points from the text.

Enem 2023 takes place on the 5th and 12th of November, with tests on languages, mathematics, natural sciences, humanities and a dissertation-argumentative essay. The essay is the only written part of the exam and is administered on the first Sunday of the exam.

When the Enem essay can be cleared

There are at least 8 situations that can lead the candidate to have their Enem essay grade reset to zero:

  1. Blank essay sheet: the grade will be reset if the student submits the official essay sheet blank, even if they wrote the text on the draft sheet. Therefore, you need to pay attention to time and take a few minutes to read the text cleanly on the writing sheet.
  2. Insufficient text: Texts with up to 7 lines can also be reset as they are considered insufficient.
  3. Illegible text or in a foreign language: the writing must be legible and written in Portuguese. Texts considered impossible to read due to handwriting or being in another language will be disregarded and reset.
  4. Off topic: Another aspect that can lead to 0 in writing is avoiding the topic. If the proposed topic asks for an analysis of a problem in Brazil, for example, talking about the same problem, but with a focus on another country, could constitute a departure from the topic.
  5. Copy of motivating texts: the text can also be reset if the candidate copies the motivating texts or other excerpts from the question booklet and does not write at least 8 lines of their own. In this case, the copied lines will be disregarded and it will be assessed whether the text has reached the minimum size.
  6. Failure to comply with the dissertation format: The text must be dissertation-argumentative with an introduction, arguments that defend a certain point of view (statistical data, for example) and conclusion. Writing a narration of a story, a personal statement or a poem, for example, will lead to a grade of zero.
  7. Inappropriate drawings and graphic signs and disjointed parts: If the essay contains drawings, emoticons or graphic signs that have no function in the dissertation-argumentative text, the grade will be reset. The same goes for any other element that does not contribute to the construction of the text, but that takes up space on the writing sheet.
  8. Signature: essays with name, signature, initials or any type of identification will also be canceled.

Grade 1 writing skills

To avoid zero and guarantee a good performance and, who knows, even the maximum score of a thousand points, knowing the five skills required in the Enem essay can be the real asset.

Each competency is worth 200 points, which totals a thousand points. See what they are and the details of each one:

  • 1. Demonstrate command of the formal written form of the Portuguese language.

The first competence assessed is mastery of the formal written standard of the Portuguese language. In other words, if the candidate knows how to use grammar correctly.

According to the Enem 2023 Participant Handbook, the assessment is made considering the following aspects:

  • writing conventions: accentuation, spelling, use of hyphens, use of upper and lower case letters and syllable separation;
  • grammatical deviations: verbal and nominal regency, verbal and nominal agreement, tenses and verbal modes, punctuation, syntactic parallelism, use of pronouns and crasis;
  • registration choice: adequacy to the formal written modality, that is, absence of use of informal register and/or oral marks;
  • vocabulary choice: use of precise vocabulary, which means that the selected words are used in their correct sense and are appropriate to the context in which they appear.

  • two. Understand the writing proposal and apply concepts from various areas of knowledge to develop the topic, within the structural limits of the dissertation-argumentative text in prose.

Another important point — and required in the second skill — is to be familiar with the text format requested in the test: dissertation-argumentative.

In this type of text, the expected structure presents introduction, development It is conclusionorganized in paragraphs and with connected ideas.

Furthermore, according to the Participant’s Handbook, the candidate “must avoid writing a text of an expository nature only, and must clearly assume a point of view”.

  • 3. Select, relate, organize and interpret information, facts, opinions and arguments in defense of a point of view.

The third writing skill assesses the participant’s ability to select, list, organize It is interpret facts, opinions It is arguments to defend your point of view regarding the problem situation of the proposed topic.

In other words, how the student will argue, based on data and information, to reinforce their opinion in the essay. It is this competence that evaluates the repertoires presented in the text.

  • 4. Demonstrate knowledge of the linguistic mechanisms necessary to construct an argument.

Competence 4 will assess the cohesion of the text, which guarantees textual unity.

Assessors will consider the connections between parts of the text. That is, the links between words in the sentence, between sentences in the paragraph and, especially, between paragraphs in the progression of the text.

And to ensure uniformity in correction, there is a criterion that requires that at least two paragraphs begin with what is called an argumentative operator, such as “furthermore“, “therefore“, “this way“, “like this“, between others.

In summary, the Participant Handbook recommends that they should be avoided:

  • lack of articulation between sentences, sentences and paragraphs;
  • lack of paragraphing (text written in a single paragraph);
  • use of connectors (preposition, conjunction, relative pronoun, some adverbs and adverbial phrases) that do not establish a logical relationship between two sections of the text and impair understanding of the message;
  • inappropriate repetition or replacement of words without using the resources offered by the language (pronoun, adverb, article, synonym).

  • 5. Prepare an intervention proposal for the problem addressed, respecting human rights.

The fifth and final competence required in writing the Enem is the presentation of an intervention proposal for the problem addressed, respecting human rights.

When preparing the intervention proposal, the candidate must indicate:

  • The action: what can be presented as a solution to the problem;
  • The agent: who should execute it;
  • The way: how to make this solution viable;
  • The result: what effect it can achieve;
  • Detail of one of the previous elements: what other information can be added to detail the proposal.

It is essential that everything is done respecting human rights. That is, the proposed intervention cannot, for example, harm physical integrity or suggest lynching. Writing that does not follow this guideline will be reset to competency 5 (see below).

Respect for human rights

Until the 2017 edition of Enem, anyone who disrespected human rights in the newsroom had their text grade reset. At the moment, violating human rights can cost the candidate up to 200 competency points 5.

  • 📊 Context: According to Unicef, human rights are “standards that recognize and protect the dignity of all human beings”. They govern the way human beings live individually and in society, establish obligations and prohibitions to the State and encourage respect, since, when enjoying one’s right, it is necessary to respect the rights of others.

When writing the Enem, the candidate must respect this aspect in their intervention proposal, when presenting a solution to the problem addressed.

According to the Participant’s Handbook, this is an opportunity for the candidate to demonstrate their preparation to exercise citizenship and to act in reality in accordance with human rights.

During the evaluation of essays, the following principles are considered:

  • Human dignity;
  • Equal rights;
  • Recognition and appreciation of differences and diversities;
  • Secularity of the State;
  • Democracy in education;
  • Transversality, experience and globality; It is
  • Socio-environmental sustainability.

If you do not take this into account when articulating the intervention proposal, the candidate may lose 200 points of competence, reaching a maximum of 800 points in the essay.
