entrance exam

During this period, many students face fear of the future

The National High School Exam is approaching! The test, which is considered the main gateway for Brazilian students to Higher Education, takes place on the 5th and 12th of November, the following two Sundays, throughout the country.

The first day of the exam marathon (5) will focus on the areas of Languages; Codes and their Technologies; Essay; Human Sciences and their Technologies. The second day of tests (12) will assess candidates’ knowledge in the areas of Natural Sciences and their Technologies; Mathematics and its Technologies.

According to the educational coach and teacher at Fundação Escola de Comércio Álvares Penteado (FECAP), Maria de Lurdes Zamora Damião, if the student dedicated himself and studied the contents during high school or created a schedule of the subjects in the last weeks and months, the tendency is to do well on the test.

“Now, if you haven’t studied until now, time is short. However, it is still possible to review the contents until the day of the exams. Start by listing the subjects, so that the ones you consider most challenging are the first on the list and the last ones are the ones you consider easiest. This will be the order in which you will study, first the most challenging ones and lastly, when you are tired, the easiest ones and, probably, the ones you like the most”,

recommends the coach.

According to the teacher, during this period, many students face fear of the future, that is, they are affected by anxiety, which is a normal response of the human body to stressful situations. Being evaluated mobilizes us, and stress and anxiety can trigger the search for preparation or interfere with our emotions and the activities we carry out, damaging our performance.

For those who are anxious about the test, the teacher has separated some tips that can help with concentration in this final stretch:

  • It is interesting to read the notice to obtain the information and avoid inconvenience;
  • Pay attention to the times and location to calculate travel time on the day of the test;
  • Remember to leave everything planned for exam days, avoiding delays or forgetting the document, online or physical, and the necessary materials.
  • Organize fixed times to study daily, use the topics to be worked on in each subject as guidance;
  • Turn off notifications on your cell phone and laptop;
  • Don’t be tempted to study just one subject each day, study 3 or 4 subjects a day, dedicating an average of 1 hour to each topic;
  • If you find it interesting, use the pomodoro method (25 minutes of intense concentration, followed by 5 minutes of break and rest) to maintain focus;
  • If you have difficulty focusing, do meditation or some mindfulness exercise, such as Mindfulness – preferably before exams, they are excellent for minimizing anxiety.

The exam selects students for public higher education places, through the Unified Selection System (Sisu), for scholarships in private institutions, through the University for All Program (ProUni), and serves as a parameter for the Student Financing Fund (Fies). The results can also be used to enter Portuguese educational institutions that have an agreement with the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep).

For many Brazilian students, Enem involves the only possibility of pursuing higher education, with excellent scores to study at public universities, having a scholarship from a quality private university or, later, through Prouni. Given this, what if the result in the test is not what the young person expected? What to do with frustration?

“After the test, relax and, if the result is not positive, in 2024 you will have a new opportunity”,

concludes Maria de Lurdes.
