An agreement between the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV) and the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) ended the player’s case wallace, do Cruzeiro, on Monday night (15). In addition to reducing the penalty imposed on the athlete – from five years to 90 days away from competitions – the punishment given to the CBV of loss of transfers of public funds for a period of six months was replaced by a fine to be paid by the entity.
“From the beginning, despite the express repudiation by COB and CBV of the athlete’s act, the attempt was to sensitize everyone involved so that there would be as little damage as possible to Olympic sport and Brazilian volleyball on the way to Paris 2024. I would like to thank you, as there was a multilateral effort to reach an understanding. We understand that the moment is one of union and resumption, and the consensual agreement does not fail to reflect Olympic values. Among them, the respect we have always had for CBV”stated Paulo Wanderley, president of COB, in an official note.
Olympic champion for the Brazilian team, wallace he had been punished by the COB Ethics Board in early April with a 90-day suspension for crime on social networks. The penalty referred to the publication made by him on Instagram on January 30. In the post, the athlete appeared armed with a pistol, and polled whether he should shoot the president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The Cruzeiro player, however, was released in mid-April to play the final stretch of the Superliga, by injunction granted by the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD). After that, the COB Ethics Council not only increased the athlete’s removal from the courts from 90 days to five years, but also suspended the transfer of public funds to the CBV for six months.
With the reduction of the penalty, wallace he had served the remainder of his sentence during his vacation. The COB maintained Wallace’s ban on representing the Brazilian national team for one year (until February 2024), but the player had already announced his retirement from the national team.
Even with the agreement, the COB does not recognize the result of the Minas vs Cruzeiro final, due to Wallace’s participation in the match – at the time the opposite was removed from the courts by the Ethics Committee. Under the agreement, the CBV is obliged to finance, with its own resources, a program to value the ethical posture of athletes on social networks, under the coordination of the Compliance Officer (Directorate of Observance) of the COB.
In an official note, the CBV commented on the signing of the agreement.
“The CBV appreciates the commitment of all those involved in finding a consensual solution. CBV reaffirms that it does not condone acts of incitement to violence, as manifested from the beginning. It is time to return to the values of sport as an instrument of unity and not as a means of stirring up rivalries. The parties have the opportunity to use this episode as an instrument of transformation and education for the responsible use of social media. Brazilian volleyball goes in search of excellence, as a world power, alongside its partners, the Brazilian Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Sport”.
The agreement was signed by directors Paulo Wanderley (COB), Walter Pitombo Laranjeiras (CBV), player Wallace and representatives of the Ethics Council of COB and AGU. After the consensus, it was decided that there will be no more questioning in court by those involved.
