Brazilian Paralympic table tennis won eight medals, two of them gold, at the Slovenian Open. One of the gold medals was in the WD14 doubles, won by Lethicia Larcerda in partnership with the Ukrainian Maryna Lytovchenko, on Saturday (13), the last day of disputes. The Open is one of the competitions on the world circuit that scores the most for the world ranking, a list that serves as a parameter in the race for a place in the Paris 2024 Games.
The Brazilian is from class 8 (walking athletes, with less physical-motor impairment, while the Ukrainian is leader of the ranking of class 6 (walkers, with greater impairment). sets to 2.
There was also a final between Brazil and Asia in the mixed doubles XD17. However, world champions Bruna Alexandre and Paulo Salmin were beaten by China’s Weinan Peng and Guiyan Xiong, 3 sets to 2.
Three of the five bronze medals in the competition were also won on Saturday (13) by Paulo Salmin and Israel Stroh (MD14); by Thiago Gomes in partnership with the Spaniard Eduardo Martinez (MS 22); and by Marilane Santos and Olympic medalist Cátia Oliveira (WD5) – the table tennis player had already won an individual bronze at the Open on Thursday (11)
The first individual gold at the Slovenian Open came exactly on Thursday (11) with Bruna Alexandre, Olympic runner-up in Tokyo – then, on Saturday (12), she would return to the podium with silver, in a pair with Salmin. She climbed to the top of the podium undefeated by winning the class 10 final against China’s Hou Chunxiao by 3 sets to 0. On the same day, Jennyfer Parinos, team medalist in Tokyo, was bronze.
Brazil was represented by 16 athletes at the Slovenian Open, an event on the world circuit. In addition to ranking points, the competition serves as a preparation for the Parapan American Games in Santiago (Chile) – from November 17th to 26th – whose winners guarantee a direct spot for the Paralympics in Paris.
Classes
In Paralympic table tennis, athletes are divided into 11 classes (ten for physical disabilities and one for intellectual disabilities). In the case of physical disability classes, the higher the number, the lower the physical-motor impairment of the athlete.
Classes 1 to 5 include wheelchair athletes, while classes 6 to 10 are for walking athletes.
In mixed disputes, classes are added together, as was the case with the pair of Brazilian Lethicia Lacerda (class 8) and Ukrainian Maryna Lytovchenko (class 6), winners in group WD14.
