The implementation of free flow (free traffic, in translation from English) as a requirement on highways granted in the country should double the use of automatic tags in vehicles in the next two years, according to estimates by the Ministry of Transport.

Represented by Abepam (association of automatic payment companies), the mobility industry claims that there are currently 12 million drivers using some form of tag payment, a number that has grown by 50% since March 2020.

So far, the adoption of this mechanism has expanded motivated by the convenience of entering and leaving shopping centers, parking lots, and tollbooths, posting the account directly to the credit card.

“Although used more frequently at tolls, the tags can be used at several other points. Today, there are more than 11,000 establishments in Brazil that accept the tags as a form of payment in parking lots, car washes, drive-thru and gas stations , for example”, says Carlos Gazaffi, president of Abepam and Sem Parar.

The free flow system is being tested by the Ministry of Transport and, with the positive results, it has become a requirement for the next highway concession contracts.

Starting with the highways in Paraná, which are close in the federal government’s concession plan, all the others require the private sector to replace toll plazas with a system of sensors installed along the highway.

When passing through them, the driver is charged for the route traveled directly on the registered credit card.
