Embratur (Brazilian Agency for International Tourism Promotion) vetoed the participation of a Brazilian company in the agency’s stand set up at Top Resa, a fair held in Paris and dedicated to the tourism market. The reason would be the lack of sustainable practices on the part of the travel operator.

The barred company is Havas Creative Tours, which has been welcoming foreigners to Brazil since 1989. Its owner, Francisco Havas, even complained about the exclusion during a workshop held by Embratur in Rio de Janeiro, last week.

According to people who witnessed the dialogue, the businessman claimed to be the person who brings the most French people to the country.

In response, he heard from Embratur’s International Fairs and Markets manager, Bruno Reis, that Havas Creative Tours did not score in any of the sustainability criteria present in the notice that selected the brands represented in Paris.

The unprecedented movement comes in the wake of Embratur’s efforts to prioritize diversity and sustainability criteria in its partnerships. The idea is to reinforce the country’s commitment to the climate and provide a counterpoint to the administration of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

The presence of the Brazilian stand at Top Resa also marks the country’s return to the fair — under the previous government, which clashed with French President Emmanuel Macron, Brazil stopped attending the event used to promote national destinations.

Among the tourism operating companies and tourist destinations participating in the event, which started this Tuesday (3), are the Brazilian Luxury Travel Association (BLTA), focused on the luxury market, and Malocas Jungle Lodge, based in the Amazon. Representatives from the cities of Foz do Iguaçu and Salvador were also invited.
