The Regional Electoral Court of Amapá (TRE-AP) prepared special training for indigenous voters. The initiative of the Amapá Electoral Judiciary School (EJE-AP) will serve more than 4,000 indigenous people living in villages in the Serra do Navio and Oiapoque regions. The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) software was adapted for indigenous culture, with the purpose of improving voter interaction with the equipment. The fictitious candidates registered in the electronic ballot boxes are represented by fruits and animals from the Amazon.
The equipment will be used for the first time in the itinerant action that TRE Amapá will participate in together with the Regional Labor Court (TRT-8) in Oiapoque between June 30th and July 7th.
“The goal of TRE Amapá is to take this training to all indigenous peoples in the state. The people of the Kuahí and Kumarumã villages will be the first to receive the adapted urns, but the project is just beginning. Indigenous voters need to know that their vote matters, and that the Electoral Court is concerned with their understanding of the electoral process”, said the president of TRE Amapá, judge João Guilherme Lages.
The translations of the Electoral Justice texts were carried out by indigenous students, scholarship holders of the Institutional Scholarship Program for Teaching Initiation (PIBID), belonging to the Intercultural Indigenous Degree course at the Oiapoque Campus of the Federal University of Amapá (UNIFAP). In the Oiapoque region, in the extreme north of Brazil, there are 3,686 indigenous voters, distributed in five villages. The process of translating the material went through the analysis of the students in search of a consensus to establish common words among the ethnic groups. The work was coordinated by Professor Dr. Agerdânio Andrade de Souza, professor at the Federal University of Amapá, in the areas of Exact Sciences and Nature.
The project seeks, in addition to improving communication, to speed up voting in the electoral process. The coordinator of the EJE, Rinaldo Farias, explains that the personalized electronic ballot boxes will be used in two projects, one of which is training voters to vote.
“The equipment will also be used for the poll “Value your Vote”. The survey was adapted to the indigenous reality with the translation and adequacy of the questions”, explains.
