Election for mayor of SP will have dispute between candidates from the south zone – 03/25/2023 – Panel

Next year’s municipal election in São Paulo could see three of the main candidates for mayor with roots in the outskirts of the southern part of the city, an extensive and impoverished region, home to around 2.5 million inhabitants.
The current mayor, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), who is seeking re-election, is based in the regions of Interlagos, where he lives, in addition to Cidade Dutra and Santo Amaro.
Named as his main opponent, federal deputy Guilherme Boulos (PSOL) lives in a house in the Campo Limpo neighborhood. He is the coordinator of the MTST (Movement of Homeless Workers), an entity with a large presence on the outskirts of the capital.
Member Tabata Amaral (PSB) was also raised in Vila Missionária, where her parents still live. He usually stays at their house on weekends, when he’s in São Paulo.
This coincidence should throw spotlights on the region in the electoral campaign, and give rise to a dispute over who is the true candidate of the south zone.
Allies of Nunes and Tabata criticize Boulos, for example, for being a middle-class man from São Paulo, who only moved to the periphery when he began his political militancy.
Nunes, in turn, is attacked by opponents for being more connected to businessmen in the region than to social movements, while Tabata is routinely accused of his connection with businessman Jorge Paulo Lemann, for having studied with a scholarship granted by the foundation linked to the billionaire.
