Manaus (AM) — Women are still minorities in candidacies for state mayors. However, in 2024, the number of candidates for mayoralty of Manaus may increase, if names like those of state deputies Alessandra Campelo (Podemos) and Joana Darc (União Brasil) are, in fact, candidates for municipal office. In addition to them, public defender Carol Braz (MDB) is also considered for dispute.

This Wednesday (2), Alessandra Campelo traveled to Brasilia to meet with the top of Podemos and put her name at the disposal of the acronym to run for Mayor of Manaus.

The parliamentarian is yet another option for Governor Wilson Lima’s (UB) group for municipal succession in the capital in 2024. During the meeting in Brasília, Campelo also discussed details about his tenure in the state presidency of Podemos, with the party’s national president, Mrs. federal deputy Renata Abreu (Podemos-SP). Other party leaders were also present.

The state representative’s idea is to align with Renata Abreu’s project, which defends the advancement of women in politics and in spaces of power.

Public defender Carol Braz ran in the 2022 elections for the Democratic Labor Party (PDT), for the Government of Amazonas, but did not pass the first round, receiving 87,114 votes (4.55%). To Em Tempo, Braz stated that his last election brought a great result and that despite not winning, the numbers were surprising.

“Our vote here in Manaus surprised us with a very good vote, we managed to reach more than seven percent in a first campaign, since I don’t come from a political family. I come from the area of ​​justice and I felt very honored to be a woman in the election, to represent women and I think that we need, we need to have women in this next election, we need to have women everywhere”

he declared.

Regarding a possible candidacy for the 2024 elections, Carol Braz declared “I can’t say now about the candidacy”, but that supports the cause of women candidacy in 2024.

“So I can’t say now about the candidacy, but I say that I really hope that we have women everywhere. As a public defender, I defend the cause of women and I defend that we need women in companies, in management, everywhere and also women in politics, because it is in politics that we are going to define the state budget, where the, where the resources will be allocated, what the political priorities will be, if our priority is to build a daycare center or if it is to pave a street and we need women to participate in this process”

Braz announced her departure from the PDT in May of this year and declared that she is in dialogue with the MDB-AM, through which she can run in the next elections for the Mayor of Manaus.

“I want to be with people who do great things, people who really know how to do it. Today, I see Senator Eduardo Braga, who was governor, who built hospitals, who built schools, who built more than 30,000 houses. It’s on the side of people like this that I want to be. Today, in my transition, I want to do more for people and to do more I need to be with people who know how to do it”

said Carol about affiliation to the MDB-AM.

In an interview with Em Tempo, in March of this year, state deputy Joana Darc, when asked about a possible nomination to compose David Almeida’s ticket as deputy mayor, stated that she would accept the possibility with honor.

“It would be an immense honor to accept the possibility of being called to be deputy mayor. It is important to point out that Manaus never had a female mayor, nor did Amazonas have a female governor. My dream in politics is that in many years, perhaps, I will be the first woman mayor of Manaus. Being mayor would be a dream within politics. As a parliamentarian, I can charge, supervise actions, propose projects, allocate resources, but what actually executes is the city hall and the government”
