More than a year away from the 2024 elections, politicians interested in the dispute for the City Hall of Curitiba are moving to win the main chair of the March 29 Palace.

The situation group began articulating earlier —an alliance created during the 2020 election race between Governor Ratinho Junior (PSD) and current Mayor Rafael Greca (PSD), re-elected that year, facilitated the victory and also laid the foundations for the ticket that should be headed next year by Eduardo Pimentel (PSD).

Grandson of former governor of Paraná Paulo Pimentel and deputy mayor of Curitiba since 2017, Pimentel was also appointed secretary in the Government of Paraná, in charge of the Cities portfolio, at the beginning of Ratinho Junior’s second term.

His brother, Daniel Pimentel, has been at the head of Copel (Companhia Paranaense de Energia) since 2019.

Despite the machine surrounding his name, Pimentel was little tested at the polls – before becoming deputy, he never held an elective mandate. And he carries a defeat in the 2010 election, when he tried to be a state deputy for the PSDB.

Opposition acronyms, such as PT, PDT and PSB, repeat a dilemma of previous elections and today are divided between launching their own candidates or forming a broad left front.

There are those who defend an alliance only in a possible second round, given the difficulty of reaching a consensus name for the head of the ticket.

The name of federal deputy Luciano Ducci, who is already presenting himself as a pre-candidate for the PSB, faces resistance among local PT members, because of past ties with the PSDB, especially at a time when the toucans still had a leading role in the clash with the PSDB. PT.

Ducci was deputy to Beto Richa (PSDB) and commanded the city hall from the departure of the toucan to the government of Paraná. Last year, with the entry of Geraldo Alckmin into the PSB and the national alliance with Lula’s PT, leaders of the Curitiba PSB abandoned the boat, migrating to Ratinho Junior’s PSD. Ducci remained in the PSB and joined Lula’s transition team at the end of 2022.

Among PT supporters resistant to the name of Ducci to head an eventual broad front of the left are those who are sympathetic to the name of the pedetista state deputy Jorge Brand, Goura, who was Greca’s opponent in the 2020 election and is treated as a natural name of the PDT for 2024.

That year, Greca was re-elected in the first round and Goura was in second place, with more than 13%. Goura is a defender of the broad left front, but keeps his name available for the polls.

The PT never commanded the City Hall of Curitiba, but it helped to elect Gustavo Fruet, from the PDT, in the 2012 election. , federal deputy Carol Dartora and state deputy Maurício Requião, for example.

Curitiba City Hall has also never been commanded by a woman.

Between the state and municipal machine guaranteed to Eduardo Pimentel by Greca and Ratinho Junior and the discussion on the left, names with electoral potential still circulate and capable of shuffling the pre-election scenario, such as that of former federal deputy Paulo Martins (PL ) and state deputy Ney Leprevost (União Brasil).

Both Paulo Martins and Ney Leprevost, although they are opponents of Greca, are close to Ratinho Junior and still believe they can get the governor’s support, despite the articulations around Eduardo Pimentel. “The governor can run with two horses,” Martins told Sheet.

Allied with former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), Paulo Martins declares himself a right-wing pre-candidate. Last year, he starred in the polls in a fierce dispute with Sergio Moro (União Brasil) in the Senate election and surpassed better known names in Paraná politics, such as Alvaro Dias (Podemos). During the campaign, Martins was personally engaged by Ratinho Junior, with whom he is a friend.

Moro ended up winning that election, but Martins’ PL demands an investigation by the Electoral Justice on the ex-federal judge’s campaign expenses. Possible consequences of this, such as an eventual impeachment of Moro, are being closely monitored by the parties in Paraná, which comment on the possibility of a supplementary election for the Senate.

There is another unknown between the parties. Former Lava Jato prosecutor Deltan Dallagnol (Podemos) also had his name aired to run for Mayor of Curitiba next year, but the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) recently removed his mandate as federal deputy, pointing out that he was ineligible when he registered for the election to the Chamber last year. Deltan still appeals, although an overturn in the STF (Federal Supreme Court) is considered unlikely.

State deputy Ney Leprevost has the performance of 2016 in mind, when he went to the second round with Greca, taking out of the game the then mayor and candidate for re-election, Gustavo Fruet (PDT). In 2020, then affiliated to the PSD, Leprevost was the main obstacle to Greca’s re-election, but ended up withdrawing from the dispute, after the consolidation of the alliance between Ratinho and Greca. Later, he migrated to União Brasil.

Now, within União Brasil, Leprevost may not find space to run for mayor in 2024, although he guarantees that he has the support of the president of the acronym, Luciano Bivar. In Paraná, the União Brasil is led by the Francischini family, which hints at an alliance with Eduardo Pimentel’s PSD.

On the PSD ticket, state deputy Flávia Francischini (União Brasil) would be a candidate for deputy mayor. Another possibility would be an own candidacy, but via federal deputy Felipe Francischini (União Brasil), son of former federal deputy Fernando Francischini, impeached by the TSE for fake news about the electronic voting machines and today with a commissioned position in the Ratinho Junior administration.

But other parties are also eyeing Eduardo Pimentel’s vice chair, such as the Barros family’s PP. One of the articulations involves the name of state deputy Maria Victoria (PP), daughter of Ricardo Barros, licensed federal deputy and secretary of Ratinho Junior.

Bolsonaristas Barros and Francishini are part of the broad alliance that supported the re-election of Ratinho Junior last year.
