Through social networks, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes (PSD), reacted negatively to the recommendation of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) for the return of the use of masks indoors and in agglomerations.
“City Hall is against this measure and we hope they don’t invent distance learning”, said the mayor on the social network Xformer Twitter, on the morning of this Thursday (17).
Minutes later, Paes shared a publication in which the municipal secretary of Health of Rio de Janeiro, Daniel Soranz, reinforces that “there is currently no change in the epidemiological scenario that justifies the indiscriminate use of a mask”.
In a note, the State Department of Health (SES) said that “it has not observed a representative increase in cases and deaths from Covid-19 in recent weeks” and that “it monitors the early indicators of the disease in the state on a daily basis, among them, the number of requests for beds and assistance in emergencies and UPAs of the state network”.
the recommendation
By means of a technical note, last Wednesday (16), the Nucleus for Combating and Studies in Emerging and Reemerging Infectious Diseases (Needier) of UFRJ justified the recommendation claiming precaution against “a new wave of covid-19”.
In the note, Needier does not cite any scientific evidence that ensures the effectiveness of the use of masks against the spread of the Chinese virus.
“We think it prudent to alert the university’s social body and recommend the proper use of masks in closed environments and in contexts of human agglomeration, as well as frequent hand hygiene. case of covid-19”, says an excerpt from the note.
