Eduardo Leite: Jean Wyllys’ position is a sign against respect – 07/20/2023 – Panel

The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB), told the Panel that the appointment of former deputy Jean Wyllys to the Social Communication Secretariat of the Lula government would be a sign against the “path of temperance, balance and respect”.

The statement was given after Leite announced that he filed a complaint against Wyllys with the Public Prosecutor’s Office for comments made by the former deputy that associated his decision to keep the civic-military schools with “internalized homophobia” and “fetish for uniforms”.

The governor is also president of the PSDB, and has been seeking to maintain a cordial relationship with the Lula government, even in opposition.

Despite the criticism of Wyllys’ appointment, Leite said that the fact does not cause any noise in the relationship with Lula. “The action is against the individual and his manifestation, not against the position he occupies or will occupy and not against the federal government”, he says.

He also stated that he respects the right of the federal government to nominate whoever it wants. “I respect their right to nominate whoever they understand should be at their side in the government, integrating their project, in accordance with their values”.

The governor, however, added that the signaling of the federal government would be bad. “I’m sorry if [o governo Lula] confirm the nomination, the signaling in the opposite direction to the path of temperance, balance and respect”, he says.

Wyllys was announced as a member of Secom by the first lady, Janja Lula da Silva, after he returned from self-exile abroad during the government of Jair Bolsonaro. Minister Paulo Pimenta, from Secom, however, has not talked about the appointment and attributions of the post.

When contacted by the Panel, Wyllys declined to comment. Lucas Mourão, who represents the former deputy, said that he prefers not to speak before there is formal notification about the case. Wyllys was at a PT event in Bahia this Thursday (20).
