Governor Eduardo Leite (PSDB) was not well received at the biggest event on economic freedom in Rio Grande do Sul. The toucan was booed at various times during his lecture at the Freedom Forum, which takes place at Pucrs until this Friday (14).
“Brazil’s political directions: For those who don’t know where they are going, any path will do” was the theme of the lecture that the gaucho shared with Romeu Zema (Novo), governor of Minas Gerais. Upon being announced, Leite received unison boos from the liberal public and some timid applause.
Soon after, the audience applauded the names of Zema, federal deputy Marcel van Hattem (Novo), state deputy Felipe Camozzato (Novo) and the deputy mayor of Porto Alegre, Ricardo Gomes (PL).
When both went up on stage, the man from Minas Gerais was welcomed by shouts: “Zema, Zema, Zema”. Leite did not lose his composure, and spoke into the microphone: “Congratulations, Zema. They are shouting for you”, said the governor, in a speech that was followed by applause.
During the lecture, the audience continued to react to the speeches of the governors. When Zema cited austerity practices carried out in Minas Gerais, as measures to combat the fiscal crisis in his state, the governor said that they were measures that Leite also practiced in Rio Grande do Sul. In unison, the audience answered a long “no”.

After these episodes, the lecture ran without major conflicts. Both governors cited their actions ahead of their respective governments, commented on political ideologies and economic freedom and, of course, did not fail to give their opinion on the main themes of national politics, such as tax reform.
The governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (Novo), was in Porto Alegre to participate in the Freedom Forum, an event of liberal ideology that is already traditional in Rio Grande do Sul, which includes lectures and debates on politics and the economy.
On the occasion, the man from Minas Gerais commented on the tax reform – an agenda that has guided the national political agenda since President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) took office earlier this year.
The governor of the country’s third largest economy defended the simplification of the tax system, which should be implemented in the federal government’s proposal. “It’s a very good simplification, it will be good for the companies, for the municipalities, for the states and for the Union. It will even have a way of supervising much better”, said Zema.
The manager also opined that the reform cannot propose tax increases. “What the reform cannot have is an increase in the tax burden in general. But it will have a calibration, since there will be a monetary authority that will be able to speak. The rate is not 25%. It is 24.5%, if it is not there. having an increase in the tax burden”, he said, before participating in a lecture with the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB).
Zema has known Leite for four and a half years, since both were elected governors for the first time. They govern states that have been living with deep fiscal crises for years and conducted their first terms with a focus on trying to rebalance the public finances of their respective states.
“Minas and Rio Grande do Sul have very similar situations. I know that well. Both Governor Eduardo Leite and I carry out responsible management, based on technical staff, which values mainly the attraction of investment and a less hostile environment for the productive sector. similarities we have”, said the Minas Gerais governor.
